Ever wondered why plants always seem to grow towards windows? This experiment shows you exactly how light affects plant growth and helps you understand the science behind it.
You'll split 20 seedlings into 5 groups and place them at different distances from a window (0cm, 20cm, 40cm, 60cm, and 80cm). The clever bit is covering half the seedlings with aluminium foil caps - this lets you compare how covered and uncovered plants respond to light.
After 3 days of equal watering, you'll see clear differences in growth direction and rate. This experiment demonstrates phototropism - the way plants grow towards light sources to maximise their energy from photosynthesis.
Quick Tip: Make sure your aluminium caps are all the same size to keep your results fair and accurate!

Knowing how many organisms live in an area is crucial for conservation and understanding ecosystem health. Scientists use two main methods involving quadrats - think of them as sampling squares that help estimate huge populations.
The random sampling method uses a number generator to place your quadrat randomly across the habitat. Count the plants inside, repeat several times, then calculate the mean per square metre. Multiply this by the total habitat area to estimate the whole population.
Alternatively, the transect method involves stretching a line across the area and placing quadrats at regular intervals along it. This method works brilliantly when you want to see how populations change across different zones of a habitat.
Remember: The more samples you take, the more accurate your population estimate will be!

Your body is constantly working behind the scenes to keep everything balanced - this is called homeostasis. Think of it like an automatic pilot system that you never have to consciously control.
Blood glucose regulation involves two key hormones from your pancreas. When glucose levels spike after eating, insulin moves excess glucose into muscle and liver cells, converting it to glycogen for storage. When levels drop, glucagon converts stored glycogen back to glucose.
Temperature control happens through receptors in your skin and a control centre in your brain. Your kidneys also play a vital role in homeostasis by filtering blood and reabsorbing useful substances like glucose and water whilst removing waste.
Did You Know?: Your kidneys filter about 180 litres of blood every day - that's roughly 50 bathtubs worth!

Decomposition is nature's recycling system, and understanding it helps explain how nutrients cycle through ecosystems. When organisms die, microorganisms like bacteria break them down, releasing carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.
Temperature and moisture are crucial factors affecting decay rates. Warmer, damper conditions speed up decomposition because enzymes in decomposer organisms work faster. However, if it gets too hot, these enzymes denature and decomposition actually stops.
The decay cycle works through detritus feeders first breaking material into smaller pieces, then bacteria and fungi finishing the job. This process creates compost - a natural fertiliser that gardeners love because it's packed with mineral ions that plants need.
Eco Tip: Understanding decomposition helps explain why composting works so well for garden waste!

Plants might seem passive, but they're constantly responding to their environment through plant hormones called auxins. These responses, called tropisms, help plants survive by growing in the right directions.
Phototropism makes shoots grow towards light (positive) whilst roots grow away from it (negative). Gravitropism causes shoots to grow away from gravity (negative) and roots to grow towards it (positive). These responses ensure plants can photosynthesise effectively whilst anchoring themselves properly.
Auxins control these movements by causing cells to elongate more on one side than the other. Other plant hormones include gibberellins (which start seed germination) and ethene (which controls fruit ripening).
Nature's Smart: Plants use these hormone responses to find the best conditions for growth without being able to move around like animals!

The mechanism behind phototropism is actually quite elegant. When light hits one side of a plant shoot more than the other, it triggers a hormone response that makes the plant bend towards the light source.
Here's the step-by-step process: more auxin gets sent down the shaded side of the shoot, causing cells there to elongate more than on the lit side. This uneven growth makes the shoot bend towards the light source - pretty clever!
Gravitropism works similarly but with gravity as the stimulus. In roots, auxin actually inhibits growth on the lower side, making the root grow downwards. The required practical involves growing cress seeds in containers with holes to observe these responses firsthand.
Lab Success: Use identical hole sizes in your containers to ensure fair testing conditions for your phototropism experiment!

Your endocrine system is like your body's chemical messaging service, using hormones to coordinate everything from growth to emergency responses. Unlike your nervous system, hormones work slowly but have long-lasting effects.
The pituitary gland in your brain acts as the 'master gland', controlling other hormone-producing organs. Adrenaline from your adrenal glands prepares you for 'fight or flight' by increasing heart rate and glucose delivery to muscles. Thyroxine from your thyroid controls your metabolic rate and growth.
Blood glucose control demonstrates negative feedback perfectly. High glucose triggers insulin release, which lowers glucose levels. Low glucose triggers glucagon release, which raises glucose levels. This constant balancing act keeps your blood sugar stable.
Amazing Fact: Your pituitary gland is only about the size of a pea, yet it controls many of your body's most important functions!

Type 1 diabetes occurs when your pancreas can't produce insulin, requiring insulin injections to control blood glucose. Type 2 diabetes happens when cells stop responding to insulin properly - often linked to obesity and treated with diet control and exercise.
Your kidneys are incredible filters, managing water balance by controlling what stays in your blood and what becomes urine. They filter out waste like urea (from protein breakdown) whilst reabsorbing useful substances like glucose and the right amount of water.
ADH fine-tunes water balance. When your blood becomes too concentrated, more ADH makes your kidney tubules more permeable, reabsorbing more water back into your bloodstream.
Health Note: Kidney dialysis machines can take over kidney function for people with kidney failure, but they need to be used three times per week!

Your body has several key endocrine glands working together to maintain homeostasis and coordinate responses. Each gland has specific roles and locations that make biological sense.
The pituitary gland sits protected in your brain and truly earns its 'master gland' title by producing multiple hormones that control other glands. Your thyroid gland near your throat produces thyroxine for metabolism control.
Adrenal glands positioned near your kidneys and stomach can quickly flood your system with adrenaline when you're stressed or scared. The pancreas handles blood glucose control, whilst ovaries and testes produce sex hormones for reproduction and development.
Body Geography: The positioning of these glands isn't random - they're located where they can work most effectively!
