Biological Molecules: Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are essentially sugar-based molecules that your body uses for energy and structure. Think of them as biological building blocks made entirely from carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.
The simplest carbohydrates are called monosaccharides - single sugar molecules like glucose that you've probably heard about in relation to blood sugar levels. When you need more complex structures, your body joins these simple sugars together through a clever chemical process.
Here's where it gets interesting: when two monosaccharides decide to link up, they form a disaccharide through something called a condensation reaction. During this process, a water molecule gets removed (hence "condensation"), and a strong glycosidic bond forms between the two sugars. It's like molecular superglue!
