Increases temperature = Photosynthesis increases - stops at a certain temp. due to enzymes denaturing

How does temperature affect photosynthesis

The higher the light intesity = The faster the rate of reaction

How does light intensity affect photosynthesis

Conc. of CO2 increases = rate of reaction increases - CO2 is needed to make glucose

How does carbon dioxide concentration affect photosynthesis

Chlorophyll is a pigment in the leaf, it converts light energy into food - Chlorophyll levels decrease = Mg deficiency (rate of photosynthesis decreases)

How does the amount of chlorophyll affect photosynthesis

Take a boiling tube and place 10cm away from LED light source (LED doesn't give off much heat)

Step 1 of photosynthesis required practical

Fill boiling tube with sodium hydrogen carbonate solution (this releases CO2) - Then place a pondweed in the cut end at the top - Leave for 5 mins to acclimatise

Step 2 of photosynthesis required practical

Once you see oxygen bubbles being produced from the cut end of pondweed, start a stopwatch and count number of bubbles produced in 1 min - repeat 2 more times

Step 3 of photosynthesis required practical

Repeat the experiment but from 20, 30, 40cm away from the LED and get the mean from each one

Step 4 of photosynthesis required practical

Number of bubbles can be too fast to count accurately - The bubbles aren't the same size

What are the 2 problems with this practical

Measure the volume of oxygen produced instead of counting bubbles

How to solve the 2 problems of the photosynthesis practical

Place the pondweed in a funnel and catch bubbles in a measuring cyclinder - to measure volume of O2 produced

At night = light intensity - In winter = temperature - Other conditions = usually CO2

When are there limiting factors for photosynthesis

Optimise farming conditions by using artificially made conditions for temp. - light intensity - CO2 conc.

Temp. = heaters for cold months - CO2 conc. = paraffin heaters give off CO2 - Light is artificially made to provide energy

How do greenhouses control the farming conditions

Light intensity is proportional to 1/distance^2 - distance measured in metres

1/(0.10x0.10) -> 1/0.01 -> 100 arbitrary units

If light is 10cm away from plant, what is the light intensity reaching the plant

Process of transferring energy from glucose so living processes can occur - exothermic reaction

C6H1206 + O2 -> C02 + H20 - Uses most energy, most reactions that make it up occur in mitochondria

C6H1206 -> Latic Acid (in animals) or C6H12O6 -> Ethanol + CO2 (in plants/yeast, makes bread) - occurs when not enough oxygen, used as last resort

Heart rate + breathing rate/volume increases - respiration needs to happen faster due to cells needing more oxygen 

Amount of extra O2 body needs after exercise to react with latic acid and remove it from cells
