Energy During Exercise and Cellular Respiration

Your muscles work overtime during exercise, demanding loads more energy than usual. To meet this demand, your heart pumps faster and you breathe more rapidly, getting extra oxygen to your muscle cells for aerobic respiration.

When you're pushing really hard and oxygen can't keep up, your body switches to anaerobic respiration. This produces lactic acid as a waste product, which builds up in your muscles and makes them feel tired and achy. After exercise, your body needs extra oxygen (called oxygen debt) to break down this lactic acid - that's why you keep breathing heavily even after you stop.

Cellular respiration is the process that releases energy from glucose in every living cell. In aerobic respiration, glucose combines with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and loads of energy. Anaerobic respiration happens without oxygen but produces much less energy and creates harmful waste products like lactic acid.

Quick Tip: Remember that anaerobic respiration is your body's emergency backup when you can't get enough oxygen to your muscles!

Your body uses glucose for loads of different jobs through metabolism - not just respiration, but also making proteins, storing energy as fat or starch, and building cell walls in plants.

Photosynthesis and Crop Production

Plants are brilliant energy converters, using photosynthesis to turn sunlight into glucose. The equation is: carbon dioxide + water + light energy → glucose + oxygen. This happens in chloroplasts using the green pigment chlorophyll.

Several factors affect how fast photosynthesis happens. Temperature speeds up the reaction until it gets too hot (around 45°C) and enzymes start to break down. Light intensity increases the rate up to a point, and carbon dioxide concentration directly affects how much glucose plants can make.

The limiting factor is whichever condition isn't at its optimum level - like having plenty of light but not enough CO2. Farmers use this knowledge in commercial greenhouses, controlling temperature with heaters, boosting light with artificial lighting, and pumping in extra CO2.

Real World: Greenhouse farmers use computer systems to balance the costs of heating and lighting against increased crop yields - it's all about making a profit whilst maximising photosynthesis!
