How Nitrogen Gets Into Living Things
You're breathing nitrogen right now - it makes up about 78% of the air! But here's the thing: neither you nor plants can actually use nitrogen gas directly from the atmosphere. That's where nitrogen-fixing bacteria become the heroes of this story.
These special bacteria work like tiny factories, converting nitrogen gas into nitrates that plants can actually absorb through their roots. Once plants have these nitrates, they use them to build amino acids - the building blocks of proteins that keep them healthy and growing.
When animals (including you!) eat plants, those amino acids get passed along the food chain. This means every protein in your body started its journey as nitrogen gas in the atmosphere!
Quick Tip: Remember that bacteria are doing the hard work here - without them, the nitrogen cycle would completely stop, and life as we know it wouldn't exist.
Completing the Nitrogen Cycle
After animals and plants die, or when animals produce waste, the nitrogen doesn't just disappear - it gets recycled back into the system. Decomposer bacteria break down dead organisms and waste products, converting the nitrogen back into ammonia.
But plants can't use ammonia directly either, so nitrifying bacteria step in to convert that ammonia back into nitrates. These nitrates can then be absorbed by plants again, keeping the whole cycle spinning.
There's one more type of bacteria worth knowing about: denitrifying bacteria. These work in the opposite direction, breaking down nitrates and releasing nitrogen gas back into the atmosphere. They're like the cycle's pressure valve, preventing too much nitrogen from building up in the soil.
