The World of the Microscope
Ever wondered how we can see things that are completely invisible to the naked eye? Light microscopes use beams of light to create images, whilst electron microscopes use beams of electrons instead. This difference is huge - it's like comparing a torch to a laser pointer in terms of power!
When you're using a microscope, magnification tells you how much bigger the image appears compared to the real object. You calculate this by multiplying the objective lens power by the eyepiece lens power. There's also a handy formula: Magnification = size of image ÷ size of real object.
Resolution is just as important as magnification - it's your microscope's ability to show fine detail by distinguishing between two separate points. Light microscopes can resolve details down to about 200 nanometres and magnify up to ×2,000. Electron microscopes are absolute beasts though - they can magnify up to ×2,000,000 with resolution down to 0.2 nanometres.
Quick Tip: Remember the units! From centimetres to millimetres (×10), millimetres to micrometres (×1000), then micrometres to nanometres (×1000). Each step makes things 10-1000 times smaller!
