Your body is constantly fighting off nasty microorganisms that want... Show more

Pathogens are basically troublemaking microorganisms that sneak into your body and cause disease. Think of them as unwanted guests that trash your house! The main culprits are bacteria, viruses, protists, and fungi - each with their own sneaky ways of making you feel rubbish.
Bacteria are tiny living cells that love to reproduce rapidly inside your body. They make you ill by producing toxins that damage your cells and tissues - it's like they're poisoning you from the inside. Meanwhile, viruses are even smaller and work differently by hijacking your cell's machinery to make copies of themselves until the cell literally bursts.
Protists are single-celled organisms that often act as parasites, whilst fungi penetrate plant and animal tissue to cause disease. These pathogens spread through water, air droplets, and direct contact - which is why washing your hands is so important!
Quick Tip: Remember that bacteria produce toxins, but viruses actually destroy cells by bursting them - this difference often comes up in exam questions!

Let's look at some key diseases that pop up in exams. Measles is a viral infection spread through air droplets that causes a red rash and fever - thankfully, there's a vaccination for it. HIV is more serious, spreading through bodily fluids and attacking your immune cells, though antiretroviral drugs can control it.
Plant diseases are equally important to understand. Tobacco mosaic virus stops leaves from photosynthesising properly by discolouring them, whilst rose black spot (a fungal disease) creates purple-black spots that make leaves fall off. You can treat fungal plant diseases with fungicides and by destroying infected leaves.
Malaria deserves special attention as it's caused by a protist carried by mosquitoes (the mosquito is called a vector). Prevention includes mosquito nets and insecticides. For bacterial diseases, salmonella causes food poisoning with fever and vomiting, whilst gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection treated with antibiotics.
Exam Alert: Learn the pathogen type, symptoms, and treatment method for each disease - examiners love testing these connections!

Your body is like a fortress with multiple layers of protection. The skin acts as your first barrier, whilst hair and mucus in your nose trap pathogens. Your trachea and bronchi produce mucus too, and tiny cilia sweep it away. Your stomach even produces hydrochloric acid to kill anything nasty you've swallowed!
When pathogens do get through, white blood cells spring into action with three main strategies: phagocytosis (literally eating the invaders), producing antibodies to target specific pathogens, and making antitoxins to neutralise toxins.
Vaccinations work by introducing dead or inactive pathogens into your body, causing it to produce antibodies and create memory cells. These remember how to fight the disease if it returns. Whilst vaccinations prevent epidemics and control diseases, they don't always work for everyone and can occasionally cause bad reactions.
Memory Trick: Think of white blood cells as having three superpowers - eating (phagocytosis), targeting (antibodies), and neutralising (antitoxins)!
