Osmosis in Plant Tissue tests how different solution concentrations affect cell mass. Cut equal potato cylinders, weigh them, then place them in various sugar/salt concentrations (0%, 10%, 20%). After 30+ minutes, dry and re-weigh them. Calculate percentage change using: ÷Initial×100.
Enzyme Investigation examines how pH affects amylase breaking down starch. Mix starch solution with buffer and amylase, then test drops with iodine at regular intervals. When iodine stays orange instead of turning blue-black, all starch has been digested. Record this time and repeat with different pH values.
Pro Tip: For the photosynthesis practical, make sure your pondweed is fresh and healthy. Damaged plants won't produce reliable results as their photosynthesis rate may already be compromised.
Photosynthesis and Light Intensity uses pondweed to show how light affects oxygen production. Place pondweed in water with sodium hydrogen carbonate (CO₂ source), position a lamp at various distances, and count oxygen bubbles produced per minute. Remember to keep temperature and other variables constant for fair testing.
Required Practicals - Additional Notes
When analyzing your photosynthesis results, don't forget the important mathematical relationship. Light intensity follows the inverse square law - as you double the distance, the intensity decreases to a quarter of the original.
To apply this in your practical, use the formula: Light intensity ∝ 1/distance². This explains why the bubble count drops so dramatically as you move the light source further away from your pondweed.
This mathematical relationship helps you predict and explain your results, showing you understand the underlying physics of your biology experiment. It's exactly the kind of connection examiners love to see in your answers!
