Viral diseases present a much bigger challenge. Viruses are sneaky - they reproduce inside your own cells, making it incredibly difficult to develop drugs that kill the virus without damaging your healthy cells. This is why antibiotics are useless against viral infections like flu or COVID-19.
Antiviral drugs do exist, but they only slow down viral development rather than cure the disease. Viruses are constantly changing their surface proteins (antigens), which means scientists must continuously develop new treatments to keep up with these rapidly evolving pathogens.
The viral infection process is quite dramatic - viruses enter your cells, strip off their protein coats, hijack your cell's manufacturing system, and force it to produce new viruses instead of doing its normal job, often destroying the cell in the process.
