Understanding Different Types of Medicine
Your medicine cabinet contains two main types of drugs that work in completely different ways. Painkillers like paracetamol and aspirin are brilliant at making you feel better, but they're essentially just masking the problem - they relieve symptoms without actually killing the nasty bugs making you ill.
Antibiotics are the real disease fighters. These powerful substances slow down or completely stop bacterial growth, actually curing diseases by destroying the pathogens causing them. However, here's the catch - they only work against bacterial infections, not viral ones like the common cold.
The story of penicillin is pretty amazing. Back in 1928, Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered this life-saving antibiotic when he noticed that some bacteria in his petri dish had been killed by naturally occurring penicillium mould. Talk about a happy accident that changed medical history!

How Antibiotics Work and Why Viruses Are Tricky
Antibiotics are clever because they can damage bacterial cells without harming your own cells. Since their introduction, they've massively reduced death rates worldwide by curing diseases that previously killed people. Different bacteria cause different diseases, which is why doctors need various antibiotics in their toolkit.
Viral diseases present a much bigger challenge. Viruses are sneaky - they reproduce inside your own cells, making it incredibly difficult to develop drugs that kill the virus without damaging your healthy cells. This is why antibiotics are useless against viral infections like flu or COVID-19.
Antiviral drugs do exist, but they only slow down viral development rather than cure the disease. Viruses are constantly changing their surface proteins (antigens), which means scientists must continuously develop new treatments to keep up with these rapidly evolving pathogens.
The viral infection process is quite dramatic - viruses enter your cells, strip off their protein coats, hijack your cell's manufacturing system, and force it to produce new viruses instead of doing its normal job, often destroying the cell in the process.
