Animal and Plant Cells

Your body and every plant around you are made of cells - think of them as nature's LEGO blocks. Understanding these microscopic structures is absolutely crucial for your biology exams, and once you get the hang of it, spotting the differences becomes second nature.

Both animal and plant cells share five essential components that keep life ticking along. The nucleus acts like the cell's control centre, storing all the genetic information and directing cellular activities - imagine it as the cell's brain. Meanwhile, the cytoplasm serves as a liquid workspace where all the important chemical reactions happen.

The cell membrane works like a selective bouncer, carefully controlling what substances can enter and leave the cell. Mitochondria are the cell's powerhouses, carrying out aerobic respiration to provide energy for all cellular processes. Finally, ribosomes function as protein factories, synthesising the proteins that cells need to function properly.

Plant cells have three additional structures that give them superpowers animal cells lack. Chloroplasts contain the green pigment chlorophyll and carry out photosynthesis, allowing plants to make their own food from sunlight. The permanent vacuole contains cell sap and helps maintain the cell's rigidity, whilst the cell wall made from cellulose provides extra support and strength that plants need to stand upright.
