Anaerobic Respiration Basics

When you're sprinting for the bus or doing intense exercise, your muscles need loads of energy fast. Anaerobic respiration happens when your body can't supply enough oxygen for normal aerobic respiration to keep up with demand.

Think of it as your body's backup generator. Unlike aerobic respiration, this process doesn't use oxygen at all - that's what "anaerobic" means. Instead, it breaks down glucose incompletely, which is why it releases much less energy than the normal process.

The key equation is simple: Glucose → lactic acid + energy. This process can only work for short bursts though - it's definitely not sustainable for long periods.

Lactic acid builds up in your muscles during this process, and here's where things get uncomfortable. This acid is actually poisonous to muscle tissue and stops them from contracting and relaxing properly. That burning sensation you feel during intense exercise? That's lactic acid making your muscles fatigued.

After intense exercise, you'll notice you keep breathing heavily even when you've stopped. This is because your body has an oxygen debt that needs paying back. The lactic acid must be broken down using oxygen to get your muscles back to normal: Lactic acid + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water.
