Mitosis: The Cell Division Process
Your body is constantly making new cells to help you grow and fix damaged tissues. Mitosis is the clever process that makes this happen by creating two genetically identical daughter cells from one parent cell.
Before any cell can divide, it needs to prepare during interphase. This preparation happens in three stages: G1 (cell growth and making new organelles), S (DNA replication), and G2 (more growth plus making proteins needed for division). During the S phase, the cell basically makes a complete copy of all its DNA.
The actual division process has four main stages that flow smoothly from one to the next. Each stage has a specific job that ensures the new cells get exactly the right amount of genetic material.
Key Point: Mitosis creates diploid cells (cells with two copies of each chromosome), which is essential for maintaining the correct genetic makeup in your body's tissues.
