A Vida e Formação de Justus von Liebig
Johann Justus von Liebig nasceu em 12 de maio de 1803 em Darmstadt, Alemanha. Desde pequeno, ele já mostrava uma paixão pela química, fazendo experimentos na oficina do pai. Em 1828, casou-se com Henriette Moldenhauer e juntos tiveram 5 filhos.
A formação acadêmica de Liebig foi um tanto incomum. Após abandonar o ginásio e um aprendizado como farmacêutico, ele seguiu estudando por conta própria através de livros e experimentos pessoais. Iniciou seus estudos formais na Universidade de Bonn e depois se transferiu para a Universidade de Erlangen, onde conseguiu seu doutorado em Filosofia em 1822.
Com uma bolsa de estudos, Liebig teve a oportunidade de estudar na prestigiada Universidade de Sorbonne em Paris. Sua carreira acadêmica decolou quando, em 1824, tornou-se professor extraordinário na Universidade de Giessen, onde realizou grande parte de seu trabalho revolucionário.
Você sabia? Liebig era fascinado por compostos explosivos desde jovem, e seu interesse pela produção de fulminato de mercúrio foi um dos primeiros indicativos de sua vocação para a química.
O Legado Científico de Liebig
As descobertas de Liebig transformaram a química e suas aplicações práticas. Ele desenvolveu a Teoria dos Radicais, criou fertilizantes minerais revolucionários e formulou a Teoria da Isomeria. No campo prático, inventou o extrato de carne, o espelho de prata, superfosfatos e até o fermento em pó que usamos na cozinha!
Entre suas muitas invenções estão também o clorofórmio, a liga ferro-níquel, o pirogalol e até mesmo os primeiros alimentos industrializados para bebês. Seu laboratório em Giessen se tornou um modelo para instituições de ensino em química, atraindo estudantes de toda a Europa.
A Lei do Mínimo de Liebig é talvez sua contribuição mais duradoura para a agricultura. Esta lei estabelece que o crescimento de uma planta é limitado pelo nutriente que está em menor quantidade no solo, mesmo que todos os outros nutrientes estejam abundantes. Esse princípio mudou completamente a forma como entendemos a nutrição vegetal e o uso de fertilizantes.
