Los Dos Tipos de Respiración
Tu cuerpo tiene dos tipos de respiración que funcionan juntas como un equipo perfecto. La respiración pulmonar es la que notas cuando inhalas y exhalas - básicamente intercambias gases en tus pulmones, tomando oxígeno y eliminando dióxido de carbono.

El sistema respiratorio incluye partes como las vías nasales, la tráquea, los bronquios y los alvéolos pulmonares. Cuando inspiras, tus pulmones se expanden gracias al diafragma y los músculos intercostales.

El Increíble Intercambio de Gases
Los alvéolos son como pequeños globos con paredes súper finas rodeados de capilares sanguíneos. Aquí es donde ocurre la magia del intercambio de gases que te mantiene vivo.
El proceso funciona por difusión - las moléculas de oxígeno se mueven desde donde hay mucha concentración (en los alvéolos) hacia donde hay menos (en tu sangre). La hemoglobina actúa como un taxi que transporta el oxígeno por todo tu cuerpo.
Al mismo tiempo, el dióxido de carbono hace el viaje opuesto: sale de tu sangre y entra a los alvéolos para que lo exhales. Es un intercambio perfecto que ocurre millones de veces al día sin que te des cuenta.

Los Peligros del Tabaco y la Contaminación
El tabaquismo es uno de los peores enemigos de tus pulmones. Los cigarrillos contienen nicotina, monóxido de carbono y alquitrán - tres sustancias que dañan tu sistema respiratorio.
La nicotina llega rápidamente a tu cerebro y crea dopamina (por eso es adictiva), pero también aumenta tu presión arterial y ritmo cardíaco. El alquitrán es responsable de la mayoría de lesiones pulmonares en fumadores.
