Ever wondered how psychologists know if their research actually proves anything? That's where statistical testing comes in - it's like having a mathematical detective that tells you whether your results are genuinely meaningful or just a fluke.
The most important concept here is significance. We use an accepted probability level of 0.05, which means there's only a 5% chance your results happened by accident. Think of it as being 95% confident in your findings! For really serious stuff like drug trials, researchers demand even stricter standards at 0.01 (99% confidence).
The sign test is your go-to statistical tool when you're looking for differences between two conditions, using the same participants twice, and working with simple category data. It's straightforward and perfect for A-level psychology studies.
Quick Tip: Remember the three key ingredients for finding your critical value - significance level (usually 0.05), number of participants, and whether your hypothesis predicted a specific direction or just "there will be a difference."
Working Through a Sign Test Example
Let's make this real with an actual example comparing energy drink performance versus water. The process is surprisingly simple once you break it down into clear steps.
Step 1 involves calculating the difference between your two conditions and marking each participant with either a + or - sign. Don't worry about the actual numbers - you're just looking at the direction of change. In our energy drink study, most participants performed better with the energy drink .
Step 2 and 3 are about counting your signs and finding your calculated value (S). You count up all the + signs and - signs, then take whichever is smaller as your S value. In this example, we had 13 positive and 7 negative results, so S = 7.
The final step compares your calculated S (7) with the critical value from the table (5 for our study). Since 7 is greater than 5, the results aren't significant - meaning we can't confidently say energy drinks actually improve performance.
Exam Success: For your calculated value to show significance, it must be equal to or less than the critical value - this trips up many students!
