What Are Energy Resources?
Think of energy resources as nature's power banks that we've learned to tap into for electricity, heating, and transport. These resources come in many forms, from the wind that spins turbines to the oil that powers cars.
The main players include renewable sources like wind, solar, hydroelectricity, geothermal, and tidal power - these naturally replenish themselves as we use them. Then there are non-renewable sources like fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas) and nuclear fuel, which take millions of years to form and will eventually run out.
Nuclear fuel deserves special attention because elements like uranium can release absolutely massive amounts of energy - much more than burning coal or oil. Meanwhile, fossil fuels are essentially ancient plants and animals that got buried and compressed over millions of years, storing chemical energy we can release through combustion.
Key Point: The main difference between renewable and non-renewable isn't just about replacement - it's about timescales. Renewable sources replenish in human timescales, whilst non-renewable sources take geological ages to form.
