Electric Circuit Components
Every electric circuit needs different parts to work properly, and each component has a specific job. Think of them like the different players on a football team - they all work together to make something happen.
A switch is probably the most familiar component - it's what you use to turn lights on and off. When it's closed, electricity can flow through the circuit, and when it's open, it stops the flow completely.
Lamps work by heating up a thin wire called a filament until it glows brightly. The electrical current flowing through creates enough heat to produce the light you see.
Resistors are like speed bumps for electricity - they limit how much current can flow through a circuit. A fixed resistor always provides the same amount of resistance, whilst a variable resistor lets you adjust it by moving a slider (think volume controls on speakers).
Quick Tip: Remember that resistance is like a narrow doorway - it makes it harder for electricity to get through!
Some resistors are clever and change their resistance based on conditions around them. A thermistor changes its resistance with temperature - high resistance when it's cold, low resistance when it's warm. An LDR does the same thing but with light levels instead.
A semiconductor diode is like a one-way street for electricity - current can only flow through it in one direction. Finally, cells and batteries provide the electrical energy that powers everything (a battery is just multiple cells working together).
