Ever wonder why you don't fall through your chair or how magnets work without touching? It's all about contact and non-contact forces, and they're simpler than you might think.
Contact forces need objects to physically touch each other to work. Think about pushing a door open - your hand has to touch the door to make it move. The three main contact forces you'll encounter are friction (like your shoes gripping the pavement), air resistance (what slows down a falling leaf), and tension (the force in a stretched rope or elastic band).
Non-contact forces are like invisible hands that can push and pull objects without touching them. These include gravitational force (what keeps you stuck to Earth), magnetic force (how magnets attract or repel), and electrostatic force (why your hair stands up after going down a plastic slide). The space around objects where these forces work is called a force field - imagine it as an invisible bubble of influence.

Understanding Mass and Force Fields
Here's something mind-blowing: Earth and the Moon are constantly pulling on each other, even though they're thousands of kilometres apart! This happens because the Moon sits within Earth's gravitational field.
Mass is simply how much stuff an object contains, measured in kilograms. Earth has a massive 6.0 × 10²⁴ kg of mass, whilst the Moon weighs in at 7.3 × 10²² kg - that's still incredibly heavy, but about 80 times lighter than Earth.
Mass is what scientists call a scalar quantity because it only tells us how much there is, not which direction it's pointing. You can't have "5 kg to the left" - it's just 5 kg, full stop.
Real-World Connection: This is why astronauts float on the Moon but don't fly off into space - the Moon's gravity is weaker than Earth's, but it's still there!
