The Norman Conquest and Key Battles of 1066

The Three Epic Battles of 1066
Harold Godwinson became king in January 1066, but his problems started immediately. He knew William, Duke of Normandy was planning an invasion, plus Harald Hardrada (Norway's king) and Scotland's king were also eyeing his throne.
The Battle of Fulford Gate was a complete disaster for Harold. He'd left his northern earls to handle the Norwegians while he stayed south watching for William. Big mistake! Hardrada smashed the English forces and captured York, then camped at Stamford Bridge waiting for tribute money.
But Harold wasn't done yet. At the Battle of Stamford Bridge, he marched 15,000 men (including 3,000 elite housecarls) an incredible 185 miles in just 4 days. The Norwegians were caught completely off guard - both Hardrada and Harold's own brother Tostig were killed.
Think about it: Harold's army had just won a brilliant victory, but they were absolutely knackered. Then William landed at Pevensey...
Just four days later came the Battle of Hastings. William brought 9,000 men and 700 ships, immediately building motte and bailey castles. Harold's exhausted army tried to surprise the Normans but ended up in a brutal fight where the famous Anglo-Saxon shield wall held strong - until the Normans possibly used a fake retreat to break English ranks.

Why William Actually Won at Hastings
You might think it was just luck, but William's victory came down to four key factors that you absolutely need to remember for your exams.
Fortune wasn't really about chance - it was William's superior planning and experience. Whilst Harold was rushing around England fighting multiple enemies, William had months to prepare his invasion force properly.
Energy made a huge difference. The Normans were fresh and ready to fight, but Harold's Anglo-Saxon army had just marched hundreds of miles and fought a major battle. They were absolutely shattered.
Leadership and tactics sealed the deal. William's fake retreat was genius - when the disciplined shield wall broke ranks to chase the "fleeing" Normans, his cavalry turned around and slaughtered them. Harold's death ended any hope of English victory.
Key point: The shield wall was nearly unbeatable when disciplined, but once soldiers broke formation chasing enemies, they became sitting ducks.
This wasn't just about one battle - it changed English history forever. The Norman Conquest brought new castles, new nobles, and eventually a completely different culture to England.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
