Henry VIII's Government Structure

You'll find that Henry VIII built his government around two key institutions that gave him complete control over England. The Privy Chamber was essentially the King's private household where only his most trusted courtiers could access him directly.

Think of the Privy Chamber as Henry's inner circle - the Gentlemen of the Privy Chamber travelled with him between his 30+ residences and knew immediately whether they were in or out of favour based on dinner invitations. This might sound trivial, but dining with the King in his private rooms was serious political currency.

The Privy Council functioned as Henry's official advisory body, consisting of about 20 men who discussed matters of state. What's clever about Henry's system is how he kept ultimate control - different chief ministers led these meetings throughout his reign, but the King always had the final say.

Henry learned from his father's playbook by relying on talented advisers from outside the nobility rather than trusting established aristocrats. He used Justices of the Peace for local government, ensuring his wishes reached every corner of England without depending on potentially rebellious nobles.
