The Treaty of Versailles: Germany's Punishment

Think of the Treaty of Versailles as the world's harshest detention slip - except it lasted decades and cost billions. After losing World War I, Germany had to follow a brutal list of punishments that would shape the next 20 years of European history.

The treaty hit Germany with massive reparations of £6.6 billion (imagine paying that back over 66 years!). Their military was slashed to almost nothing - no tanks, submarines, or air force allowed. They lost all their colonies and couldn't station troops in the Rhineland near France.

Germans were absolutely furious about these terms. They called it a "Diktat" (dictated peace) because they weren't allowed to negotiate - just sign or else. Many felt "stabbed in the back" by their own politicians who surrendered when soldiers thought they could keep fighting.

Key Point: The treaty wasn't just about money - it was designed to make sure Germany could never start another major war.

Hyperinflation: When Money Becomes Worthless

In 1922, Germany basically said "we're broke" and couldn't make their reparation payments. France and Belgium didn't buy it, so they sent 60,000 troops to occupy the Ruhr - Germany's industrial heartland with all the factories and mines.

Germany's response was brilliant but backfired spectacularly. They ordered workers to go on strike (passive resistance) and printed massive amounts of money to pay them. This created a vicious cycle - more money meant higher prices, which meant printing even more money.

The result? Hyperinflation so extreme it sounds like a maths joke. An egg that cost less than 1 mark in 1914 cost 320 billion marks by November 1923. German money became so worthless that people literally used wheelbarrows to carry enough cash for a loaf of bread.

Think About It: This crisis shows how quickly an economy can spiral out of control when governments make desperate decisions.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
