The Prologue: Setting Up the Tragedy
The prologue works like a movie trailer that gives away the entire plot. Shakespeare uses it to prepare his audience for what's coming and create dramatic tension from the very start.
"Two households, both alike in dignity" immediately establishes that the Capulets and Montagues are equally powerful families. The word "dignity" shows they're both high-status, making their feud even more destructive since they should know better.
The phrase "ancient grudge" reveals this isn't some petty new argument - it's a deep-rooted hatred that's been festering for generations. This makes the conflict feel inevitable and more serious.
When Shakespeare writes "star-cross'd lovers," he's telling us Romeo and Juliet are doomed by fate itself. The stars were thought to control destiny, so their love is literally cursed from the beginning. This creates sympathy for the young couple before we even meet them.
Key Point: The prologue uses dramatic irony - we know how it ends, which makes every happy moment in the play feel bittersweet.
