The Killing

Ever wondered what it's like for soldiers to make split-second life-or-death decisions? Armitage throws you straight into the action as three soldiers encounter a looter raiding a bank.

The conversational tone ("probably armed, possibly not") shows how soldiers try to justify their actions. Notice how the speaker repeats this phrase - it reveals his desperate need to convince himself the killing was necessary. The uncertainty haunts him because the man might have been defenceless.

The brutal imagery gets increasingly graphic. "I see every round as it rips through his life" shows the speaker watched every bullet tear through the victim. The phrase "sort of inside out" demonstrates how dehumanising language helps soldiers cope with violence.

Key insight: The repetition of "somebody else" shows the speaker trying to share blame - he can't handle the guilt alone.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

Simon Armitage's "Remains" takes you inside the mind of a soldier haunted by killing a man during war. This powerful poem explores how traumatic experiences can follow you home and destroy your mental health long after the fighting ends.
