'Material' analysis
Understanding the Poem's Structure and Opening
Barber opens with the title "Material" - a clever play on words meaning both physical fabric and something significant or meaningful. The poem is written as an elegy (a poem of mourning) where the speaker reflects on her mother's relationship with handkerchiefs.
The first-person narrative creates an intimate, personal tone as the speaker recalls her "hanky queen" mother. Notice how Barber uses colloquial language like "hanky" instead of handkerchief, which immediately establishes a warm, conversational feel whilst also showing the generational shift in language.
The poet contrasts traditional cloth handkerchiefs with modern "paper tissues bought in packs from late-night garages," highlighting how cultural changes have affected even the smallest details of daily life. The mother always had hankies "up her sleeve" - both literally and as a metaphor for being prepared and nurturing.
