Understanding the Poem's Structure and Opening
Barber opens with the title "Material" - a clever play on words meaning both physical fabric and something significant or meaningful. The poem is written as an elegy (a poem of mourning) where the speaker reflects on her mother's relationship with handkerchiefs.
The first-person narrative creates an intimate, personal tone as the speaker recalls her "hanky queen" mother. Notice how Barber uses colloquial language like "hanky" instead of handkerchief, which immediately establishes a warm, conversational feel whilst also showing the generational shift in language.
