Character Analysis: Lady Macbeth and Macbeth
Lady Macbeth starts as the driving force behind the murder plot. She's ambitious and manipulative, using her intelligence to push Macbeth towards killing King Duncan. Her famous line 'Unsex me here' shows how she wants to remove her feminine qualities to become ruthless enough for murder.
However, she completely changes later in the play. The guilt destroys her mental health, and she becomes haunted by what she's done. Her earlier confidence that 'A little water clears us of this deed' turns into the desperate cry 'Out damned spot!' as she imagines bloodstains that won't wash away.
Macbeth begins as a loyal and courageous soldier, but his ambition corrupts him completely. Unlike his wife, his guilt hits him immediately - shown when he asks if all of 'Neptune's ocean' could wash the blood from his hands. By the end, he's become a tyrant who's lost everything.
Remember: Both characters become isolated - their ambition destroys their relationship and cuts them off from everyone around them.
