Macbeth's Inner Conflict and Lady Macbeth's Manipulation
Ever wondered what goes on in a murderer's mind before they strike? Macbeth's first soliloquy gives us a front-row seat to his internal battle. When he's alone on stage, we see his true feelings - he can't even say the word "murder," calling it just "it" because he's so horrified by what he's planning.
Ambition emerges as Macbeth's fatal flaw here. He admits his only reason for killing Duncan is his "vaulting ambition" - there's no noble cause, just raw desire for power. The fact that Duncan trusts him completely ("he's here in double trust") makes it even worse, showing how appearance vs reality plays out.
When Macbeth tries to back out, Lady Macbeth unleashes her masterclass in manipulation. She knows exactly how to push his buttons - attacking his masculinity by calling him a coward. Her brutal imagery about dashing a baby's brains out shows the lengths she'd go to, linking her to the supernatural and witchcraft themes.
Key insight: Lady Macbeth's reference to infanticide connects her to witches in Shakespeare's time, reinforcing the supernatural elements that drive the plot.
The scene ends with Macbeth's chilling line: "false face must hide what the false heart doth know." He's reclaiming control, but only to commit evil - showing how ambition has completely corrupted his moral compass.
