After watching for an hour, the men's efforts gradually slackened and finally ceased. One by one, these "massive" men abandon their positions, leaning on the rail to stare into the water like mystics searching for answers they'll never find.
The foreman - described as "the most original thinker" - smokes to relieve tension before walking away with "heavy majesty." His departure signals the end, and the other men follow, leaving behind the pile still hanging in mid-air and the narrator alone.
