Eric Birling: Character Analysis and Key Quotations

Eric begins the play as someone who's "not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive" - basically, he's that awkward young adult who hasn't figured out his place in the world yet. Unlike his father, Eric actually questions the family business practices, asking "Why shouldn't they try for higher wages?" This shows he's already thinking differently from the older generation.

When Eric discovers his role in Eva's death, his language becomes increasingly fragmented and emotional. Priestley uses dashes and broken sentences to show Eric's mental breakdown: "Then- you killed her... damn you, damn you-" The repetition of "killed" three times shows his raw anger, especially towards his mother for refusing to help Eva.

What makes Eric particularly interesting is how he emulates the Inspector's language after the Inspector leaves. He shouts "the girl's dead and we all helped to kill her" - essentially becoming the Inspector's voice to remind the audience (and his family) about their moral responsibility.
