Transition Metals: The Workhorses of Chemistry

You've probably used transition metals today without even realising it - they're in your phone, your cutlery, and even the coins in your pocket. These elements sit in the central block of the periodic table and share some basic properties with all metals, like conducting electricity and being shiny when freshly cut.

What makes transition metals special are their unique physical properties. They have much higher melting points than regular metals, which is why iron doesn't melt in your oven! They're also denser, stronger, and harder - perfect for construction and manufacturing.

The chemical properties of transition metals are equally fascinating. Unlike reactive metals such as sodium, transition metals react slowly with oxygen at room temperature (think of how long it takes iron to rust). They barely react with cold water, and some can react with halogens to form compounds.

Key Insight: Transition metals can form ions with different charges and create coloured compounds - this is why copper sulphate is blue and potassium permanganate is purple. Many also work as catalysts, speeding up chemical reactions without being used up themselves.
