Don't worry, we're not talking about the furry garden creatures! The mole is just a way of counting particles in chemistry, like saying "a dozen" but for atoms and molecules.
Here's the clever bit: one mole of any substance weighs exactly the same number of grams as its gram formula mass (GFM). Carbon has a GFM of 12, so one mole of carbon weighs 12g. Carbon dioxide has a GFM of 44, so one mole weighs 44g.
The formula couldn't be simpler: Number of moles = Mass ÷ GFM. Want to find 66g of carbon dioxide? That's 66 ÷ 44 = 1.5 moles.
Remember: Always work out the GFM first by adding up all the atomic masses - it's your starting point for every mole calculation.
Think of concentration like making squash - it's all about how much 'stuff' you've got packed into your drink. In chemistry, concentration tells you how much solute (the dissolved substance) is crammed into each litre of solution.
The magic formula is dead simple: Concentration = Number of moles ÷ Volume. Just remember to always convert cm³ to litres by dividing by 1000, and you're sorted.
Let's say you've got 2 moles of potassium iodide in 500 cm³ of solution. First, convert: 500 cm³ = 0.5 L. Then calculate: 2 ÷ 0.5 = 4 mol/L. Easy!
Quick tip: The triangle method works brilliantly here - cover what you want to find, and the triangle shows you whether to multiply or divide the remaining values.
