Hydrocarbons and Alkanes

Hydrocarbons are dead simple - they're any compound made from just carbon and hydrogen atoms, nothing else. Think of them as the building blocks of loads of substances you use every day.

Alkanes are the most basic type of hydrocarbon, and they're brilliant because they follow a clear pattern. Starting with methane (CH₄) - yes, that's natural gas - each alkane in the series just adds one more carbon and two more hydrogens. So you get ethane (C₂H₆), propane (C₃H₈), and butane (C₄H₁₀).

The magic formula for alkanes is CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. This means if you know how many carbons there are (n), you can work out the hydrogens easily. For propane with 3 carbons: (2×3)+2 = 8 hydrogens, giving you C₃H₈.

Quick Check: Alkanes are saturated compounds because they only have single bonds between atoms - they're "full up" and can't take any more atoms!

Homologous Series and Isomers

Alkanes belong to a homologous series - basically a family of compounds that behave similarly because they have the same functional group $in this case, just C-H bonds$ . They react in predictable ways, making chemistry much easier to learn.

Here's where it gets interesting: isomers are like molecular twins with different personalities. Take pentane (C₅H₁₂) - you can arrange those same atoms in different ways. Straight-chain pentane looks different from 2-methylbutane, even though they both have exactly the same molecular formula.

Understanding isomers is crucial for your exams because it shows how atom arrangement affects properties. The same ingredients, different recipes, different results!
