Here's the straightforward method: First, identify the elements and their masses. Then divide each mass by the element's molar mass to get moles. Next, find the ratio by dividing all values by the smallest number of moles.

If you don't get whole numbers, multiply everything by the same factor until you do. In the phosphorus oxide example, P:O gives you 1:2.5, so multiply both by 2 to get P₂O₅.

Remember: Always check your final answer makes sense - if you're getting massive numbers or weird decimals, you've probably made an error in your ratio calculations.
