Atomic Orbitals and Electron Configurations

Think of orbitals as the different-shaped "homes" where electrons live around the nucleus. These aren't physical objects you can see, but rather wave-like regions where you're most likely to find an electron hanging out.

Each orbital can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, and they come in different shapes depending on their energy level. The first energy level only has one type - the spherical s-orbital. As you move further from the nucleus, you get more complex shapes like dumbbell-shaped p-orbitals and the more intricate d-orbitals.

Energy levels work like floors in a building - the higher you go, the more space (and different types of orbitals) you find. The first floor has just one s-orbital, the second floor has one s-orbital plus three p-orbitals, and the third floor adds five d-orbitals to the mix.

Quick Tip: Remember the magic numbers - s holds 2 electrons, p holds 6 electrons (3 orbitals × 2), and d holds 10 electrons (5 orbitals × 2).

Three key principles govern how electrons fill these orbitals. The Aufbau Principle says electrons always choose the lowest energy "parking spaces" first. Pauli's Exclusion Principle means no two electrons in the same orbital can spin the same way - they must be opposites. Finally, Hund's Rule explains why electrons prefer to sit alone in separate orbitals before doubling up, like students choosing empty desks before sharing.

Atomic Orbitals and Electron Configurations
