Capítols 1-3: Deutes i Proves d'Amor
Antonio, un ric mercader de Venècia, es troba trist i melancòlic quan el seu amic Bassanio li demana diners. Bassanio vol conquistar Portia, una dona rica i bella de Belmont, però necessita diners per competir amb els altres pretendents.
El problema? Portia no pot escollir marit lliurement - ha d'acceptar qui resolgui correctament la prova dels estoigs. Mentrestant, Antonio accepta demanar diners prestats al prestamista jueu Shylock per ajudar el seu amic, tot i que Shylock l'odia per criticar els seus alts interessos.
La situació es complica quan Jessica, filla de Shylock, planeja fugir amb Lorenzo i convertir-se al cristianisme. El primer pretendent de Portia, el Príncep de Marroc, escull l'estoig d'or pensant que és el més valuós, però falla estrepitosament.
Recorda: La prova dels estoigs és clau - or, plata i plom. Cada un té una inscripció que dona pistes sobre l'elecció correcta.

Capítols 4-6: El Contracte Perillós
Les coses es posen serioses quan arriben rumors que els vaixells d'Antonio han naufragar. Shylock ha fet un contracte molt estrany: si Antonio no pot pagar, Shylock podrà tallar-li una lliura de carn del cos. Semblava una broma, però ara Shylock vol fer-ho realitat per venjança.
El Príncep d'Aragó també falla la prova dels estoigs en escollir la plata, convençut que es mereix el millor. Quan finalment arriba Bassanio a Belmont, Portia està nerviosa - realment l'estima i no vol que marxi si falla.
Bassanio, però, és més llest del que sembla. Escull l'estoig de plom després de reflexionar sobre les aparences enganyoses, i guanya! Portia li dona un anell com a símbol del seu amor, advertint-lo que mai el perdi.

Capítols 7-8: Justícia i Misericòrdia
El judici és el moment més tens de l'obra. Antonio està arrestat i sembla condemnat, ja que el Duc no pot trencar la llei. Però llavors apareix un jove advocat anomenat Balthazar... que en realitat és Portia disfressada!
Portia juga de forma brillant: primer accepta que Shylock té dret legal a la carn, però després li diu que no pot vessar ni una gota de sang o perdrà totes les seves propietats. És una trampa legal perfecta que salva Antonio.
La justícia de Venècia castiga Shylock per intentar matar un ciutadà: ha de donar la meitat dels seus béns a Antonio i l'altra meitat a l'estat. Antonio és generós i permet que Shylock mantingui els diners, però amb condicions: ha de deixar l'herència a Jessica i Lorenzo.
L'obra acaba amb una baralla còmica sobre els anells que Portia i Nerissa van prendre dels seus marits disfressades. Finalment, Portia revela la veritat i anuncia que els vaixells d'Antonio són segurs.
