When you see two brackets next to each other like , you need to multiply every term in the first bracket by every term in the second bracket. This gives you four multiplications to do.
Let's break down the pattern multiply the first terms, then the outer terms, then the inner terms, and finally the last terms. For , you get x×x + x×5 + 2×x + 2×5 = x² + 5x + 2x + 10.
The final step is collecting like terms - add together any terms that are the same. So x² + 5x + 2x + 10 becomes x² + 7x + 10.
Top Tip Remember FOIL - First, Outer, Inner, Last - to help you remember which terms to multiply together!
