Algebra is like being a detective - you're given clues in the form of equations, and your job is to solve for the mystery number. This mystery number is called an unknown variable, usually represented by letters like x or y.
Let's look at a classic example: 3x + 5 = 14. Your mission? Find out what x equals! The key is learning how to isolate the variable - basically getting x all by itself on one side of the equation.
The golden rule of algebra is whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other side too. Think of an equation like a perfectly balanced scale - you can't tip it! So if you subtract 5 from the left side, you absolutely have to subtract 5 from the right side as well.
Here's the step-by-step breakdown: Start with 3x + 5 = 14, subtract 5 from both sides to get 3x = 9, then divide both sides by 3 to find x = 3. It's that straightforward once you know the rules!
