君たちが普段使っている「アルコール」や「アルゴリズム」という言葉、実はイスラーム世界が起源なんだ。それほど私たちの生活に影響を与えた宗教と文化について見ていこう。
イスラーム教は7世紀初め、ムハンマドがメッカで神（アッラー）の啓示を受けて始まった一神教だ。ユダヤ教やキリスト教の影響も受けている。信者はムスリムと呼ばれ、**クルアーン（コーラン）**を聖典とする。
ムスリムが守るべき教えが六信五行で、特に五行（信仰告白・礼拝・喜捨・断食・巡礼）は基本中の基本だから絶対覚えておこう。ウンマというイスラーム教徒の共同体は、民族や部族を超えた結びつきが特徴的だ。

610年頃、メッカの商人ムハンマドが神の啓示を受けたことから全てが始まった。「神の前ではみな平等」という革新的な教えは、当時の大商人たちには都合が悪かった。
**622年のヒジュラ（聖遷）**が超重要ポイントだ。迫害を逃れてメディナに移住したこの年が、イスラーム暦元年となる。メディナでウンマを形成し、630年にはメッカを征服してカーバ神殿を聖地とした。
ムハンマドの死後、正統カリフ時代（632-661年）が始まる。選挙で選ばれた4人のカリフが活躍し、特に2代目ウマルの時代にシリア・エジプト・イラクを征服して急拡大した。でも4代目アリーの死後、大きな分裂が起こることになる。

スンナ派はカリフをウンマの合意で選ぶべきだと考える多数派。シーア派はムハンマドの血統（アリーの子孫）に限るべきだと考える少数派だ。現在のイラクやイランの情勢もこの対立が背景にある。
ウマイヤ朝（661-750年）は首都をダマスクスに置き、アラブ人第一主義を採用した。アラブ人のムスリムを特権階級とし、非アラブ人のムスリム（マワーリー）を差別して重い税を課した。領土は最大となり、西はイベリア半島から東は中央アジアまで広がったが、732年のトゥール・ポワティエ間の戦いでヨーロッパ進出が止まった。

アッバース朝と政策転換
ウマイヤ朝の差別政策に不満を持つマワーリーやシーア派が協力して革命を起こし、アッバース朝（750-1258年）が成立した。この政策転換が世界史の大きなターニングポイントだ。
首都をバグダードに移し、ムスリムの平等を実現した。アラブ人第一主義を廃止してマワーリーも平等に扱ったため、ペルシア人などが活躍できるようになった。これにより国際的なイスラーム文化の黄金時代が花開く。
しかし9世紀頃からカリフの権威が衰え、各地で独立王朝が生まれた。そして1258年、モンゴル帝国によってバグダードが陥落し、500年以上続いたアッバース朝は滅亡した。
