中世ヨーロッパ社会の基本構造
中世ヨーロッパ社会って、実は今の日本の会社組織に似てるんだ。ピラミッド型の階層があって、それぞれが契約関係で結ばれている。
封建制度は、土地と軍事力の交換システムだった。主君が家臣に土地（封土）を与え、その代わりに家臣は軍役の義務を負う。これは双務的契約で、どちらかが約束を破れば関係は解消される。「私の家臣の家臣は、私の家臣ではない」という言葉が示すように、王の権力は全国に直接届かなかった。
社会は「祈る人（聖職者）」「戦う人（騎士・貴族）」「働く人（農民）」の3つの階層に分かれていた。それぞれが役割を持ち、お互いを支え合う仕組みになっていたんだ。
テストポイント：封建制度の「双務的契約」という特徴は必ず覚えよう。日本の御恩と奉公との違いも重要だ。
荘園制度と人々の暮らし
荘園って、現代で言うと「自給自足の小さな町」みたいなものだった。領主の館、教会、農民の家、畑、森がセットになって、外の世界とほとんど関わらずに生活していた。
荘園は3つの部分に分かれていた。領主直営地では農奴が週2〜3日働き（賦役）、農民保有地では収穫の一部を納め（貢納）、共同利用地はみんなで使っていた。
農奴は移転や職業選択の自由がなく、結婚にも領主の許可が必要だった。でも古代の奴隷とは違って、家族を持ったり財産を所有したりすることは認められていた。厳しい身分だったけど、最低限の人権は保護されていたんだ。
覚えておこう：農奴と奴隷の違いをしっかり区別できるようにしておこう。これはテストでよく問われる。
キリスト教会の絶大な権力
中世ヨーロッパで最も恐れられていたのは、実は王様じゃなくてローマ教皇だった。なぜなら「破門」という最強の武器を持っていたから。
教皇は単なる宗教指導者ではなく、各国の王をもしのぐ政治的権力を持っていた。破門されると「神の救いが得られない」と信じられていたため、王でさえも教皇には逆らえなかった。現代で言うと「全世界から無視される」くらいの恐ろしい罰だったんだ。
修道院は当時の「大学」のような役割も果たしていた。文字を読めるのは聖職者がほとんどで、聖書の写本を作ったり、古代ギリシャ・ローマの古典を保存したりしていた。知識と情報を独占することで、教会の権威はさらに高まった。
重要事実：当時、文字を読めるのは人口のわずか数パーセント。知識＝権力だった時代なんだ。
カール大帝とフランク王国の発展
**カール大帝の戴冠（800年）**は、中世ヨーロッパ史上最も重要な出来事の一つだ。この瞬間に「ヨーロッパ」というアイデンティティが生まれたと言っても過言じゃない。
フランク王国のクローヴィスがカトリックに改宗したことで、ローマ系住民との融和が進んだ。そしてカール大帝が教皇レオ3世から「ローマ皇帝」の冠を授けられた瞬間、西ローマ帝国が理念上復活した。これはゲルマン・ローマ・キリスト教の3つの文化が融合した象徴的な出来事だった。
この戴冠は、後の神聖ローマ帝国の成立にもつながる重要な前例となった。教皇が皇帝を認定するという構図が、その後のヨーロッパ政治の基本パターンになったんだ。

カノッサの屈辱と教皇権の頂点
**カノッサの屈辱（1077年）**は、「権力とは何か」を考えさせられる歴史上屈指のドラマチックな事件だ。軍事力を持つ皇帝が、武器を持たない教皇にひれ伏した瞬間だった。
聖職叙任権をめぐって、教皇グレゴリウス7世と神聖ローマ皇帝ハインリヒ4世が激しく対立した。教皇は「聖職者の任命は教会の権利」と主張し、皇帝は「皇帝の権利」と譲らなかった。
教皇が皇帝を破門すると、皇帝は国内の諸侯からの支持を失い、地位が危険になった。追い詰められた皇帝は、雪の降る北イタリアのカノッサ城で3日間裸足で許しを請うた。この事件は教皇権が皇帝権より優位であることを全ヨーロッパに知らしめた。
この時代の教皇の権威は、現代の国連事務総長やローマ法王を合わせたよりも強大だったと考えられている。
理解のコツ：なぜ軍事力のない教皇が皇帝に勝てたのか？当時の人々の宗教観を理解することが鍵だ。
