産業革命と社会の変化
君たちが使っているスマホや服も、実は200年以上前の産業革命がルーツなんだ！18世紀後半のイギリスで始まった産業革命は、手作業中心の社会から機械を使った大量生産の社会へと変えた歴史的な大変化だった。
工場制手工業（マニュファクチュア）から工場制機械工業への変化が革命の核心部分。それまでは人の手で一つ一つ作っていた商品を、機械の力で大量に、しかも安く作れるようになったんだ。
この変化で資本家と労働者という新しい階級が生まれた。資本家は工場や機械を所有する経営者で、労働者は賃金をもらって働く人たち。この関係が資本主義という経済システムの始まりになった。
覚えておこう！ 産業革命は単なる技術の進歩じゃなく、社会全体の仕組みを変えた「革命」だったんだ。
なぜイギリスから始まったのか？
産業革命がイギリスで最初に起こったのは偶然じゃない！4つの重要な条件が揃っていたからなんだ。
まず豊富な資源。石炭と鉄鉱石がたくさん採れて、これらは機械を動かしたり作ったりするのに絶対必要だった。次に豊かな資本。植民地との貿易でお金をたくさん稼いでいたから、新しい機械や工場に投資できた。
広い市場も重要だった。イギリスは広大な植民地を持っていて、作った商品を売る場所がたくさんあった。最後に十分な労働力。囲い込み運動で土地を失った農民たちが都市に集まってきて、工場で働く人手が確保できた。
この「資源・資本・市場・労働力」の4つセットは、テストでめちゃくちゃよく出るから絶対覚えておいて！
テストのコツ 「なぜイギリスから？」の問題では、この4つの理由をセットで書けば完璧だよ。
技術の進歩と発明
産業革命の技術革新は綿織物工業から始まった。まるでドミノ倒しのように、一つの発明が次の発明を生み出していったんだ。
織物を速く作る飛び杼が発明されると、今度は糸が足りなくなった。そこでジェニー紡績機や水力紡績機が生まれて、大量の糸を作れるようになった。さらにミュール紡績機で品質も向上し、力織機で布織りも自動化された。
でも一番のゲームチェンジャーはワットの蒸気機関！これまでの人力や水力と違って、場所を選ばずに強力な力を生み出せるようになった。工場が川の近くじゃなくても建てられるようになったのは革命的だった。
蒸気機関の応用でスティーブンソンの蒸気機関車やフルトンの蒸気船も誕生。原料や製品を「速く・大量に・安く」運べるようになって、経済活動が一気に活発になった。
重要ポイント ワットの蒸気機関は産業革命の「心臓部」。これがあったから他の技術も花開いたんだ。
社会の変化と問題
産業革命は確かに生産力を飛躍的に向上させたけど、同時に深刻な社会問題も生み出した。まさに光と影の両面があったんだ。
新しく生まれた資本家階級と労働者階級の間には、大きな貧富の差が生まれた。資本家は豊かになったけど、労働者の生活は本当に厳しかった。工場では1日12〜14時間の長時間労働が当たり前で、10歳の子供まで働かされていた。
仕事を求めて農村から都市に人々が集まったため、マンチェスターやリヴァプールなどの工業都市が急成長した。でも住む場所が足りなくて、不衛生なスラム街ができてしまった。伝染病も頻繁に流行した。
こうした問題への反省から、後に社会主義という考え方が生まれることになる。マルクスなどが、資本家と労働者の対立を解決する新しい社会システムを提案したんだ。
覚えておこう！ 産業革命の「影」の部分も理解しておくことが、現代社会を考える上で重要だよ。

産業革命は現代社会の出発点となった超重要な歴史的変化だ。技術の進歩だけじゃなく、社会の仕組み全体が変わった「革命」だったことを忘れずに。
