市民革命の基礎知識
君たちが今当たり前だと思っている「自由」や「平等」という考え方は、実は300年ほど前に生まれたものなんだ。市民革命とは、商人や職人などの市民階級が中心となって、王様や貴族の古い支配体制をひっくり返した動きのこと。
この革命を後押ししたのが啓蒙思想だ。ロックは「政府が国民の権利を守らなければ、国民は政府を変える権利がある」と主張し、モンテスキューは三権分立、ルソーは人民主権を唱えた。これらの考え方が革命の理論的な土台になったんだ。
特にフランスではアンシャン・レジームという身分制度が問題だった。人口のたった2%の聖職者と貴族が税金を払わず、残り98%の平民がすべての税負担を背負っていた。こんな不平等が続けば、革命が起きるのも当然だよね。
覚えておこう: ロック→アメリカ、モンテスキュー→アメリカ憲法、ルソー→フランス革命という影響関係は試験の定番だ！
アメリカ独立革命（1775-1783年）
「親に反抗して家を出る」みたいな感じで、アメリカがイギリスから独立した戦いがこれだ。きっかけは重すぎる税金への怒りだった。
イギリスは戦争の借金返済のため、植民地に印紙法や茶法など次々と重い税をかけた。これに対してアメリカ側は**「代表なくして課税なし」**というスローガンで反発。「俺たちの代表が議会にいないのに勝手に税金かけるな！」ということだね。
ボストン茶会事件（1773年）では、怒った市民がイギリス船の紅茶を海にぶち込んだ。そして1776年7月4日、トマス・ジェファソンらが独立宣言を発表し、正式にイギリスからの独立を宣言した。
戦争ではワシントンが総司令官として活躍し、フランスなどの支援も得て勝利。1783年のパリ条約でイギリスが独立を認め、世界初の本格的な近代憲法を持つアメリカ合衆国が誕生した。
ポイント: 7月4日はアメリカの独立記念日。今でもアメリカ最大の祝日の一つだよ！

1789年5月、財政破綻したルイ16世が三部会を召集したが、議決方法で対立が起きた。第三身分は独自に国民議会を結成し、革命への第一歩を踏み出す。
そして運命の1789年7月14日、パリ市民が圧政の象徴だったバスティーユ牢獄を襲撃！これが革命の火蓋を切って落とした瞬間だ。現在でもフランスの革命記念日（建国記念日）として祝われている。
8月には国民議会が人権宣言を採択。「人間は生まれながらにして自由で平等」という考えを世界で初めて公式に宣言した画期的な文書だった。
要注意: バスティーユ襲撃の日付（7月14日）は試験でよく出題される！
フランス革命の展開と終結
革命はどんどん過激になっていく。国王一家の逃亡失敗（ヴァレンヌ逃亡事件）で国民の怒りは頂点に達し、1792年に王政が廃止されて共和政がスタート。翌年にはルイ16世と王妃マリー・アントワネットがギロチンで処刑された。
その後、ロベスピエール率いるジャコバン派が権力を握り、恐怖政治が始まる。反対派を次々とギロチンで処刑し、社会は大混乱に陥った。革命が目指していた自由とは真逆の独裁状態になってしまったんだ。
この混乱を収束させたのが軍人ナポレオン・ボナパルトだった。1799年にクーデターで権力を握り、フランス革命は終わりを告げる。
革命のスローガン**「自由・平等・友愛」**は、その後のヨーロッパ全体に民主主義の理念として広まっていった。現在のフランス共和国の国是でもあるんだ。
整理しよう: アメリカは「外の敵（イギリス）」、フランスは「内の敵（特権階級）」との戦いだったと覚えると分かりやすい！
二つの革命の比較とまとめ
アメリカ独立革命とフランス革命、どちらも市民革命だけど性格は全然違う。アメリカは比較的平和的に独立を達成したのに対し、フランスは血なまぐさい国内闘争になった。
でも共通点もある。両方とも啓蒙思想に基づいて、人民主権や基本的人権といった近代的な価値観を打ち出した点だ。アメリカの独立宣言もフランスの人権宣言も、現代の憲法や国際法の原型になっている。
これらの革命が与えた影響は計り知れない。世界各地の独立運動や民主化運動のモデルとなり、現在の民主主義社会の基礎を築いた。君たちが享受している自由や権利も、この時代の人々の闘いの成果なんだ。
試験では、それぞれの革命のスローガン、重要人物、主要文書、年代をセットで覚えよう。特に啓蒙思想家と革命の関係は頻出問題だから要注意だ。
