  • Habitus: The cultural framework and ideas of a social class
  • Cultural capital: Knowledge and behaviors that give upper/middle class students advantages
  • Hegemony: Dominance of ruling class ideas in society

  • Argues schools select people for different social classes
  • Claims education develops attitudes to support capitalist system

Bourdieu:

  • Believes education justifies and reproduces class inequalities
  • Argues dominant class imposes its habitus on schools
  • Claims success depends on cultural capital

Willis' Study on Counter-School Culture

Paul Willis conducted an influential study relevant to the Marxist view on education Sociology:

  • Examined how some students develop an anti-school subculture
  • Focused on working-class boys who rejected school values

Key findings on the "counter-school culture":

  1. Boys felt superior to teachers
  2. Placed no value on academic work
  3. Aimed to miss as many lessons as possible
  4. Tried to control their time in school

Priorities of "the lads":

  • Earning money
  • Impressing peers and girls
  • Keeping up with older drinkers

Attitudes to work:

  • Valued manual labor as "proper" work
  • Looked forward to future manual jobs
  • Prioritized non-school activities

Highlight: Willis' study shows how some students actively resist the hidden curriculum, challenging the idea that schools always successfully indoctrinate students.

This research provides insight into how class backgrounds can shape educational experiences and outcomes.

Marxist Approach to Education

The Marxist perspective on education views schools as institutions that reproduce and legitimize class inequality while serving the interests of ruling class elites. This approach examines how education performs three key functions for capitalist society:

  1. Reproducing class inequality
  2. Legitimizing class inequality
  3. Working in the interests of capitalist employers

Highlight: Marxists believe schools teach children to passively obey authority and accept existing social hierarchies.
