Chapter 2: Fire on the Mountain

In Chapter 2, Ralph calls a meeting using the conch shell to discuss rules and plans for rescue. The boys agree to maintain a signal fire on the mountain to attract passing ships. Jack volunteers his choir as hunters and fire-tenders.

Tensions begin to rise as Jack becomes more focused on hunting pigs than maintaining the fire. The chapter introduces the idea of a "beast" on the island, which frightens the younger boys. This fear becomes a tool for manipulation later in the story.

Example: The signal fire represents the boys' connection to civilization and hope for rescue. Its neglect foreshadows their descent into savagery.

Highlight: The introduction of the "beast" concept plays on primal fears and becomes a pivotal element in the story's progression.

Chapter 3: Huts on the Beach

Chapter 3 deepens the conflict between Ralph and Jack. Ralph focuses on building shelters and maintaining the signal fire, while Jack becomes increasingly obsessed with hunting. The chapter introduces Simon, who helps Ralph build the shelters while the other boys play.

Simon's character is further developed as he wanders off alone into the jungle, hinting at his unique perspective and connection to nature. The growing divide between Ralph's desire for order and Jack's pursuit of hunting foreshadows the larger conflict to come.

Character Analysis: Simon emerges as a thoughtful and compassionate character, often helping others and seeking solitude in nature.

Chapter 4: Painted Faces and Long Hair

This chapter marks a significant shift in the boys' behavior. Jack and his hunters begin painting their faces, a symbolic step towards embracing their primitive instincts. The hunters successfully kill their first pig but neglect the signal fire in the process.

A ship passes by the island, but due to the extinguished fire, fails to notice them. Ralph is furious at this missed opportunity for rescue. The chapter ends with rising tensions as Jack slaps Piggy, breaking one lens of his glasses.

Highlight: The face painting represents the boys' gradual loss of civilization and embrace of savage instincts.

Ralph calls another meeting to address the deteriorating situation on the island. He attempts to reinforce rules and responsibilities, particularly regarding the signal fire and sanitation. The fear of the "beast" grows among the boys, despite Ralph's attempts to dispel it.

Simon suggests that the beast might exist within them, a profound insight that the other boys dismiss. Jack begins to openly challenge Ralph's authority, leading some boys away from the meeting.

Quote: "Maybe there is a beast... maybe it's only us."

Character Analysis: Ralph's leadership is tested as he struggles to maintain order in the face of growing fear and dissent.

Chapter 6: Beast from Air

A dead parachutist lands on the island during the night, seen by Sam and Eric (the twins) who mistake it for the beast. This misunderstanding fuels the boys' fears and superstitions.

Ralph and Jack lead an expedition to find the beast, temporarily setting aside their differences. The chapter ends with the group reaching the far side of the island, where they discover a rocky fortress-like area that Jack finds appealing.

Highlight: The dead parachutist serves as a symbol of the adult world and its conflicts intruding on the boys' island society.

Chapter 7: Shadows and Tall Trees

The search for the beast continues, with Ralph joining in a pig hunt for the first time. He experiences a moment of savage excitement, showing that even he is not immune to the primal instincts emerging in the group.

The chapter culminates in a mock hunt where Robert plays the role of the pig, foreshadowing the violence to come. The group then climbs the mountain at night, where they see a shadowy figure they believe to be the beast.

Character Analysis: Ralph's participation in the hunt reveals the complexity of his character and the universal appeal of savage instincts.

Chapter 1: The Sound of the Shell

Chapter 1 introduces the main characters and setting of Lord of the Flies. A group of British schoolboys find themselves stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes during an evacuation. The two main characters, Ralph and Piggy, discover a conch shell on the beach.

Ralph uses the conch to summon the other survivors, including Jack Merridew and his choir boys. The boys decide to elect a leader, choosing Ralph over Jack. Ralph appoints Jack as the leader of the hunters, responsible for procuring food. The chapter establishes the initial order and civilization among the boys, but hints at the underlying tensions to come.

Highlight: The conch shell becomes a powerful symbol of order and democracy throughout the novel.

Quote: "We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages."

Vocabulary: Conch - A large spiral shell of a marine mollusk, used here as a trumpet to call assemblies.
