Christian Beliefs About the Afterlife
Christians don't see death as the final full stop - they believe something spiritual survives and continues living in a different way. This afterlife concept sits right at the heart of everything Christians believe about existence and meaning.
The foundation for this belief comes from Jesus' resurrection, when he allegedly rose from the dead three days after being crucified. According to the Gospels, women found his tomb empty on Sunday morning, with angels telling them Jesus had risen and gone to Galilee. This event provides Christians with their main evidence that death isn't the end of the story.
What's fascinating is that all four Gospels mention Jesus' resurrection, but only two bother with his birth - showing just how crucial this event is to Christian faith. After rising from the dead, Jesus supposedly spent several weeks with his disciples before ascending to heaven.
Quick Fact: Christians see Jesus' resurrection as proof that everyone can experience life after death, not just religious figures.
There are different views on when and how resurrection happens. Some Christians believe the soul is resurrected almost immediately after death, whilst others think it won't happen until Jesus returns to judge everyone. The Catholic and Orthodox Churches teach that resurrection will be physical - your old body transformed into a glorified state without pain or suffering.
