Karma and Rebirth
Karma (or kamma) is one of Buddhism's most important concepts - it's the idea that your actions have consequences. Skilful actions motivated by generosity, compassion, and understanding lead to happiness, whilst unskilful actions driven by craving, hatred, and ignorance create suffering.
Your karma doesn't just affect this life - it determines your rebirth into different realms. Good karma leads to favourable rebirths (ideally as a human, since this offers the best chance for enlightenment), whilst bad karma results in less fortunate rebirths.
This understanding forms the foundation of Buddhist ethics. Since you're responsible for your own happiness and suffering through your actions, there's strong motivation to behave skilfully - helping both yourself and others.
Buddhist ethical behaviour connects directly to core teachings like the four noble truths, the eightfold path, and the five moral precepts.
Key Point: Karma isn't about punishment or reward from a higher power - it's about natural consequences of your choices.
