Brain Structure and Function
Think of your brain as having four main districts, each with its own special job. The frontal lobe is your brain's CEO - it controls movement, behaviour, and helps store memories. Right next door, the parietal lobe processes all your bodily sensations and keeps track of where your head and body are positioned in space.
Your temporal lobe is like your brain's sound engineer, handling all acoustic processing, whilst also dealing with encoding and some visual tasks. The occipital lobe at the back of your head is your visual headquarters - it processes everything you see and handles visual perception.
Don't forget the cerebellum hanging off the back of your brain like a mini brain! This little powerhouse controls your movement, balance, and coordination - basically keeping you upright and moving smoothly.
Quick Tip: Remember "FPTO" - Frontal , Parietal (sensations), Temporal (sound), Occipital (vision)!
Your brain also has two sides with different strengths. The left brain handles logic, controls your right hand, deals with facts, analysis, and sequencing. Meanwhile, your right brain controls your left hand and specialises in creativity, insight, imagination, rhythm, and daydreaming.
Brain Damage and Famous Cases
When specific brain areas get damaged, it creates very particular problems that tell us loads about how our brains normally work. Visual agnosia happens when the parietal lobe is damaged - people can see things perfectly but can't recognise what they're looking at. Prosopagnosia is even weirder - people can't identify faces at all, making everyone look the same or completely unfamiliar.
The prefrontal cortex acts like your brain's bouncer, controlling aggression and impulses. When this area gets damaged, people often become more impulsive, irritable, and aggressive - they basically lose their self-control filter.
The most famous brain injury case is Phineas Gage, studied by Damasio and colleagues in 1984. They used his actual skull to investigate what happens when the frontal lobe gets severely damaged. Gage had extreme damage to both hemispheres of his frontal lobe, with the worst damage in the middle areas and significant white matter destruction.
Remember: Gage's personality completely changed after his accident - he became irritable and aggressive, proving the prefrontal cortex controls our impulses!
This case study had real-world relevance since it was an actual event, but it's hard to generalise from because Gage's specific brain damage was so unique and extreme.
