Understanding Wave Refraction
Refraction is what happens when waves change direction as they cross from one material into another. It's like when you're walking from concrete onto sand - you naturally slow down and might change direction slightly.
The key thing to remember is that denser materials slow waves down. Think of air as a thin soup and glass as thick honey - light moves much faster through air than through glass. When light hits glass at an angle, it doesn't just slow down - it actually bends towards an imaginary line called the normal (which is just a fancy word for a line perpendicular to the surface).
In the example shown, light hitting glass at 55° bends to 33°. This bending always happens when waves enter a denser material at an angle.
Quick Tip: Remember that light bends towards the normal when entering denser materials like glass or water.
How Speed Affects Wavelength
Here's where it gets interesting - when light slows down during refraction, something else changes too. The wavelength (the distance between wave peaks) actually gets shorter, even though the frequency (how many waves pass per second) stays exactly the same.
The relationship is simple: wave speed = frequency × wavelength. Since frequency never changes when light moves between materials, if speed decreases, wavelength must decrease proportionally. It's like a mathematical balancing act.
This explains why underwater photography can look distorted - the light waves are literally being squeezed as they slow down in the denser water.
Remember: Frequency stays constant during refraction, but speed and wavelength change together.
