Scalars vs Vectors and Basic Motion Concepts
Ever wondered why your satnav needs to know which direction you're heading? That's because vectors include both size (magnitude) and direction, whilst scalars only tell you the size.
Distance and speed are scalars - they just give you numbers. But displacement and velocity are vectors because they include direction too. Think of it this way: if you run 100m around a circular track, your distance is 100m, but your displacement might be zero if you end up back where you started!
Acceleration measures how quickly velocity changes, expressed in m/sยฒ. The formula is simple: acceleration equals change in velocity divided by time taken . Remember, since velocity includes direction, you can accelerate by speeding up, slowing down, or changing direction.
Key Tip: Velocity isn't just "speed with direction" - it's fundamentally different because direction matters in calculations!
Motion Graphs and Practical Investigation
Motion graphs are your secret weapon for understanding movement patterns. On distance-time graphs, the gradient tells you the velocity, whilst on velocity-time graphs, the gradient shows acceleration. The steeper the line, the faster the change!
When investigating motion practically, you'll likely use ramps and toy cars. Your independent variable might be the release height, whilst your dependent variable could be the time taken to travel a set distance. Always keep control variables constant - same ramp angle, same starting position, no extra pushes.
Stopwatches can be unreliable for short time intervals, so light gates give much more accurate measurements. They automatically start timing when the car breaks the first beam and stop when it breaks the second.
The kinematic equations like vยฒ = uยฒ + 2as help you predict motion without measuring time directly. Here, 's' is displacement, 'u' is initial velocity, 'v' is final velocity, and 'a' is acceleration.
