Energy Sources and Environmental Impact
The electricity charging your devices comes from two main categories of energy sources, and understanding the difference is crucial for both your exams and the planet's future.
Non-renewable sources like coal, oil, gas, and nuclear power won't last forever. Fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas) release greenhouse gases when burned, contributing to global warming. Nuclear power doesn't produce CO₂, but creates radioactive waste that needs careful storage for thousands of years.
Renewable sources never run out and are generally kinder to the environment. These include solar power, wind energy, hydroelectricity, wave power, tidal power, geothermal energy, and biofuel.
Exam tip: Remember that whilst renewable sources are cleaner, they often produce less energy and can be less reliable than non-renewable sources - this balance between environmental impact and energy security is a key discussion point in questions.
