Energy Stores and Systems
Think about your mobile phone – it's a perfect example of an energy system in action! A system is simply an object or group of objects, and it can be either closed (no energy can get in or out) or open (energy can transfer to and from the surroundings).
Here's the golden rule you need to remember: energy cannot be created or destroyed. This is called the principle of conservation of energy. Energy just keeps moving from one form to another, but the total amount always stays the same.
There are several main energy stores you'll encounter: chemical (like in food and batteries), kinetic (in moving objects), gravitational potential (in lifted objects), elastic potential (in stretched or compressed things), thermal (heat), magnetic, electrostatic, and nuclear. Energy moves between these stores through four main pathways: mechanically (forces causing movement), electrically (current flowing), heating (due to temperature differences), and radiation (waves like light and sound).
Quick Check: Can you identify the energy stores and pathways when you turn on a torch? Chemical energy in the battery transfers electrically to the bulb, then radiates as light and heat!
Kinetic energy is the energy any moving object has. The faster something moves or the heavier it is, the more kinetic energy it stores. Elastic potential energy builds up when you stretch, compress, or twist objects – think of pulling back a catapult or compressing a spring.
Gravitational potential energy (GPE) is all about height and gravity. When you lift something up, you're doing work against gravitational force and increasing its GPE. Drop it, and that stored energy converts back to kinetic energy as it falls.
