Electromagnetic Spectrum
The electromagnetic spectrum stretches from low frequency, long wavelength radio waves to high frequency, short wavelength gamma rays. Remember the visible light spectrum with the classic mnemonic "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain" (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).
Electromagnetic waves have fascinating properties. They're transverse waves that travel in straight lines and can refract. While visible light is the only part we can see with our eyes, other waves serve crucial purposes. Some waves like infrared and visible light get blocked by objects, which is why we use fibre optics to send more information efficiently.
Different waves have different applications in our daily lives. Radio waves power broadcasting, microwaves handle satellite communications and cook food, infrared works in heaters and remote controls, while visible light enables cameras. The higher-energy waves like ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays are used for security marking, medical imaging and sterilising equipment respectively.

Properties and Applications of Electromagnetic Waves
High-energy X-rays and gamma rays are forms of ionising radiation (measured in sieverts) that can damage DNA, potentially causing mutations and cancer. These waves have short wavelengths, high energy and frequency, and can penetrate skin easily.
Radio and microwave communications work differently in our atmosphere. Microwaves can escape into space, making them perfect for satellite communication, while radio waves get reflected by the ionosphere, keeping them bouncing around Earth. They're both generated when electrons oscillate in an alternating current (AC), producing electromagnetic waves at the same frequency.
All objects emit and absorb infrared radiation, commonly called black body radiation. The hotter something is, the more infrared it emits. An object's colour affects how well it absorbs or emits radiation, with black objects being the most efficient. This is why infrared cameras can detect heat signatures, making them useful for everything from building inspections to night vision.
Remember this formula! Wave speed = Frequency × Wavelength . This equation works for all waves in the electromagnetic spectrum, which all travel at the same speed in a vacuum.
